A soldier and four individuals being held captive by kidnappers were killed during a security operation to foil the abduction of Chinese expatriates in Ogun State, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred when armed kidnappers reportedly attacked a location linked to a Chinese-operated business and attempted to abduct foreign workers. Security operatives, including military personnel, responded to the distress call and engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle.
According to security sources, the operation succeeded in preventing the abduction of the Chinese expatriates. However, a soldier lost his life during the exchange of gunfire. Four hostages who had allegedly been seized by the criminals were also killed amid the confrontation.
The identities of the deceased hostages were not immediately disclosed, while efforts were ongoing to notify their families and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Authorities said several members of the criminal gang fled into nearby forests and surrounding communities after encountering resistance from security forces. A manhunt has since been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle the network responsible for the attack.
Security officials described the incident as a tragic reminder of the growing threat posed by kidnapping syndicates operating across parts of the country. They commended the bravery of the fallen soldier and other personnel involved in the operation, noting that their swift intervention prevented what could have been a successful abduction of the foreign nationals.
The attempted kidnapping has raised fresh concerns about the security of expatriates, workers, and residents in areas where criminal groups have increasingly targeted individuals for ransom. In recent years, kidnappers have expanded their activities beyond highways and rural communities, often targeting businesses and construction sites employing foreign workers.
Authorities assured the public that additional security measures have been deployed in the affected area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents and investors. They also urged citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.
Meanwhile, investigations into the incident are ongoing as security agencies work to identify the perpetrators and uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
The latest development underscores the continuing challenge posed by kidnapping and other violent crimes in Nigeria, despite ongoing efforts by security forces to curb the activities of armed criminal groups across the country.
