The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Abia State, Kalu Kalu Agu, has challenged Governor Alex Otti to identify a single project executed by his administration in Ohafia Local Government Area, saying he would quit the 2027 governorship race if one is presented.
Kalu, who hails from Ohafia, made the challenge during an interview recently.
The ADC candidate alleged that Ohafia Local Government had received more than N16 billion in allocations over the past three and a half years, but claimed that residents had not benefited from any visible project executed by the state government.
“I am from Ohafia LG of Abia State, and I’m placing it on record here that my local government has received over N16 billion for the past three and a half years,” he said.
Kalu challenged Otti and his representatives to identify any project carried out by the state government for residents of Ohafia.
“Let Alex Otti and his handlers show your station any project that his government has done for the people of Ohafia Local Government. Not one,” he said.
He subsequently pledged to abandon his governorship ambition if a single project executed by Otti’s administration in the local government could be identified.
“If your station will go to Ohafia Local Government and show one single project Alex Otti has done for the people of Ohafia Local Government, I will drop my gubernatorial ambition,” Kalu said.
Kalu’s claim contrasts with records published by the Abia State Government showing that the Otti administration has undertaken major infrastructure work in the area.
In May 2026, Otti commissioned the reconstructed 22.5-kilometre Abiriba–Ohafia Highway, naming it the Chief Otisi Kalu (Abbot) Road. The state government said the road formed part of the 67-kilometre Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Isuikwuato–Alayi–Abiriba–Ohafia Highway.
In August 2024, Otti also announced that his administration had undertaken the reconstruction of the 41.4-kilometre Ohafia–Arochukwu Federal Highway. The governor said the state had taken up the project despite it being a federal road.
There are also projects within Ohafia that were undertaken by the local government rather than directly by the state government. In August 2025, the Ohafia Local Government Council commissioned a solar-powered borehole at Ozua Amogudu, with officials at the event commending the Otti administration.
The local government also reported in September 2026 that it was implementing agricultural projects involving poultry, pepper cultivation and beekeeping.
In January 2026, Otti commended the Nkporo Development Union, USA branch, for establishing a Unity and Technology Centre in Nkporo, which is in Ohafia Local Government Area. The centre includes a digital laboratory, e-library and facilities for entrepreneurship and skills development. The project was community-funded, although Otti pledged government support for the facility.
The available records therefore show that projects have been undertaken in Ohafia during Otti’s tenure, although the funding and ownership of individual projects differ. Kalu’s specific challenge concerns projects directly executed by the Abia State Government.
The ADC candidate also alleged that Ohafia had been without electricity for nearly a decade.
He said the prolonged power shortage had affected residents and economic activities in the area. The allegation was made as part of his criticism of the administration but was not independently established by the sources reviewed.
Kalu said his proposed administration would focus on creating opportunities for young people and improving economic conditions in the state to discourage residents from leaving Abia in search of better opportunities.
Kalu Kalu Agu is the ADC’s listed governorship candidate for Abia State in the 2027 election, with Alozie Ogadinma Darlington as his running mate. The party released its governorship candidates for 28 states in September 2026.
The challenge comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 election, with infrastructure delivery, public spending and the distribution of development projects emerging as key issues in the campaign.
While Kalu has challenged Otti to produce one state-government project in Ohafia, official records document major road construction and other development activities in the local government during Otti’s tenure. The parties’ differing descriptions of those projects remain part of the political debate ahead of the election.
