Nigerian comedian and actor Ayodeji Makun, popularly known as AY, has shared a 2019 Instagram message from Afrobeats singer Asake, highlighting the musician’s humble beginnings before his rise to international fame.
AY disclosed the message after attending Asake’s sold-out concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, where the singer performed as part of his “In God We Trust” tour.
According to AY, he did not see the direct message when it was initially sent in 2019. In the message, Asake, who introduced himself as “Ololade”, appealed to the comedian to listen to and support his music.
Asake reportedly told AY that he had released a song titled “African Something” and that AY’s support and engagement with the record would mean a lot to his budding career.
“Help a son sir,” the singer wrote in the message, while asking for AY’s support and blessing.
Reflecting on the old message after watching Asake perform before a large audience in Houston, AY said he was not sharing the exchange to claim credit for the singer’s success.
He attributed Asake’s achievements to his talent, hard work and what he described as God’s grace.
AY said the experience reminded him that people seeking opportunities should not be dismissed because their circumstances can change with time.
“The truth is that the person asking to be seen today may become the person the whole world will celebrate tomorrow,” he said, urging people to treat others with kindness and respect their dreams.
The comedian also revealed that Asake’s management took him backstage after the concert, where the singer personally came to greet him.
AY praised Asake’s humility despite his success and described his Houston performance as evidence of the singer’s growth from an upcoming artiste seeking recognition to an internationally celebrated performer.
He congratulated Asake, saying that Nigeria and Africa were celebrating his achievements as his music continues to reach audiences around the world.
Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade Asake, rose to prominence after signing with YBNL Nation and releasing his debut album “Mr. Money With the Vibe” in 2022. His subsequent success has established him as one of the leading Nigerian Afrobeats artistes on the international music scene.
AY’s revelation has since drawn attention to the singer’s early efforts to build his career and the importance of supporting emerging talents before they attain mainstream recognition.
