If petrol hits ₦600, I’ll leave Atiku for Tinubu — Amaechi

African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has said he would withdraw from the party’s 2027 presidential ticket and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the statement on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, while challenging the Federal Government’s claims about improvements in the Nigerian economy.

The former Rivers State governor said he would personally visit a filling station the following morning to verify the price and invited journalists to accompany him with cameras.

“If fuel comes down to 600 tomorrow, I will campaign for Tinubu,” Amaechi said.

He added that if petrol was indeed available at ₦600 per litre, he would withdraw as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and support Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi was responding to Tinubu’s recent remarks on the state of the economy and the administration’s reform programme. He questioned whether Nigerians were already experiencing meaningful reductions in the cost of living.

His comments come amid an ongoing political debate over petrol pricing and the removal of fuel subsidy. Atiku has proposed a production subsidy for locally refined petrol as a means of reducing pump prices, while the Tinubu administration has rejected a return to the previous subsidy regime and promoted alternatives such as compressed natural gas.

Amaechi was selected as Atiku’s running mate on the ADC ticket in June 2026 ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The ₦600 condition therefore places petrol pricing at the centre of Amaechi’s challenge to the administration’s economic claims, while his proposed change of political allegiance remains conditional on the stated price being achieved.
