Olu Jacobs laid to rest as dignitaries attend Lagos funeral mass

The funeral mass for veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs is underway at This Present House, Freedom Way, Lekki Phase I, Lagos, with family members, colleagues and dignitaries gathered to pay their final respects.

Jacobs’ widow, actress Joke Silva, and their sons, Olusoji and Olugbenga Jacobs, were present at the service.

Among the dignitaries attending are Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, and his wife, Oluremi Hamzat; Lagos State First Lady, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; and former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

Entertainment entrepreneur Dare Art Alade also performed his song ‘Pray for Me’ during the service. Jacobs and Silva had featured in the song’s music video.

Olugbenga Jacobs also presented his father’s biography as part of the funeral proceedings.

Jacobs, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs, died on September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His death brought to an end a career spanning more than five decades across theatre, television and film.

The funeral follows a Night of Tributes and Service of Songs held on Wednesday, September 30, at Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos Island. Several Nollywood figures, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Sola Sobowale, Funke Akindele, Jide Kosoko and Hilda Dokubo, attended the tribute event.

Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before working in British theatre and television. He later returned to Nigeria, where he became one of the country’s most prominent actors.

He and Silva also co-founded the Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, contributing to film production and the training of performers.

Guests at Friday’s funeral were asked to wear shades of green. A private burial is expected to follow the service.
