One person has been killed and three others seriously injured in a fresh road crash along the Lagos Coastal Road inward Eko Hotel in Lagos.
The accident, involving a grey Lexu SUV 350 with registration number LSD 554 KV, occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Preliminary findings by LASTMA indicated that the vehicle lost control, collided violently with a roadside pole and overturned.
Three occupants were rescued from the wreckage with the assistance of passersby and taken to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for urgent medical treatment.
LASTMA officials monitoring traffic along the Coastal Road quickly mobilised to the scene, secured the affected section and coordinated the emergency response. Security personnel from Victoria Island also assisted, while LASTMA officers removed the damaged vehicle from the carriageway to prevent a secondary collision and restore traffic flow.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution while using the route.
He warned that excessive speed, reckless driving and loss of vehicular control could have serious consequences for motorists and other road users.
The latest crash comes amid heightened safety concerns on the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. In September, the Federal Government warned that the Lagos section could be closed if motorists continued to violate safety measures, including speed restrictions, while construction work remains ongoing. Officials said some motorists had been travelling at speeds of up to 120km/h despite a 30km/h limit within construction zones.
LASTMA urged motorists and members of the public to report road crashes, vehicle breakdowns, obstructions and other emergencies through its toll-free short code, 3367.
As of Friday, there was no official confirmation from LASTMA or other authorities that six people had died in the latest incident.
