The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for teachers across the state to commemorate this year’s Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Day.
The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde, and made available by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
According to the state government, the decision was made in recognition of the contributions of teachers to the development of education and human capital in Oyo State.
The government said the work-free day would enable teachers to participate fully in activities organised to mark the occasion, reflect on developments in the education sector and strengthen unity within the teaching profession.
It described teachers as a critical component of the state’s education system and reaffirmed its commitment to improving their welfare, dignity and professional development.
The government also congratulated teachers across the state and acknowledged their role in shaping the future of children and contributing to the development of Oyo State.
October 5 is observed globally as World Teachers’ Day. UNESCO says the 2026 observance marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
The work-free day means teachers in Oyo State will not be required to report for regular duties on Monday, October 5.
