Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, on Saturday swore in the newly elected chairmen and their deputies for the state’s 21 local government areas.
The inauguration followed the local government elections held on August 29, 2026, in which candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) secured all 21 chairmanship seats.
The newly inaugurated officials are expected to serve a two-year tenure under the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024. Ten of the newly elected chairmen were re-elected, while 11 are taking up the position for the first time.
The election marked the return of elected local government administrations in the state after a period in which the councils were administered through transition committees.
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission had earlier issued certificates of return to the 21 newly elected chairmen following the August poll. The commission said APGA won all 21 chairmanship positions as well as the 326 councillorship seats contested.
The swearing-in also comes amid a legal dispute over the two-year tenure of local government officials. Fifty-six serving councillors had approached the Anambra State High Court, challenging the validity of the two-year tenure provided under state law and arguing that elected local government officials should have a four-year tenure.
The newly inaugurated chairmen are expected to oversee administration and grassroots development across the 21 local government areas for the duration of their tenure.
The inauguration fulfils Soludo’s administration’s plan to conduct local government elections in the state and restore elected councils at the grassroots level.
