Tinubu administration doing well – Akpabio

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said the reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration are yielding results, while acknowledging that Nigerians are still facing challenges.

Akpabio spoke on Friday after leading a delegation of the National Assembly, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, to visit Tinubu at his Lagos residence as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

“We believe he’s doing well. These reforms are working and, as far as we are concerned, insecurities are abating and people are able to sleep well,” Akpabio told journalists after the visit.

He said the National Assembly would continue to support the administration and work with the executive to address the country’s challenges.

According to the Senate President, the government was making efforts to improve the country despite the difficult circumstances it inherited.

“So the administration is doing its best, considering the situation we took when we came about. And we are prepared and determined to make the country better,” he said.

Akpabio also acknowledged that there were still “pockets of discontent” in the country, which he partly linked to the approach of the 2027 general elections.

His comments came amid continued debate over the impact of the administration’s economic reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange market.

The Federal Government has also cited recent economic indicators as evidence of progress. The Ministry of Information said Akpabio recently pointed to 4.43 per cent real GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026, while the government has continued to defend the reforms as necessary for long-term economic stability.

Akpabio said the National Assembly remained committed to working with the executive in what he described as the interest of Nigerians.
