Wike criticises Amaechi’s record in 24 years of public service

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, questioning his record after more than two decades in public office.

Wike made the remarks amid renewed political exchanges with Amaechi, who is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The FCT minister said Amaechi had occupied several influential positions, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor and federal minister, but argued that there was little to show for his years in office.

According to Wike, Amaechi had spent about 24 years in positions of political authority without making sufficient impact to justify seeking another major political office.

The latest criticism adds to the long-running political rivalry between the two Rivers politicians. Wike served as Amaechi’s chief of staff when Amaechi was governor of Rivers State before their political relationship deteriorated.

Wike has recently maintained his support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, while Amaechi is contesting on the ADC ticket alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The two politicians have previously exchanged criticism over their political records, alliances and roles in Rivers State and national politics.

Wike’s latest remarks come as political parties and opposition groups intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the ADC positioning itself as one of the platforms challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.
