Sand-laden truck rams into Gombe government house gate, damaging multi-million naira structure

A truck loaded with sand crashed into the main gate of the Gombe State Government House on Tuesday afternoon, causing significant structural damage to the newly built facility and raising fresh questions about road safety in the state capital.

The incident occurred around 12:55 p.m. and involved a gate reportedly constructed as part of ongoing renovation projects under Governor Muhammadu Yahaya. The gate is yet to be officially commissioned.

Eyewitnesses said the truck lost control before crashing into the multi-million-naira facility. “I was standing across the road when I saw the truck approaching at speed. Suddenly, the driver seemed to lose control, and the vehicle veered off and hit the gate,” said a trader, Musa Abdullahi.

A commercial motorcyclist at the scene, Ibrahim Sadiq, said the outcome could have been far more catastrophic. “It happened very fast. People started running when they saw the truck coming,” he said.

A government aide confirmed that the gate is part of the ongoing renovation of the Government House complex. “The force of the crash bent parts of the structure,” the aide said. The Government House has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation as part of a broader infrastructure push by the Yahaya administration.

The vehicle is alleged to belong to Tricata Nigeria Ltd, although its registration number was not made available at the scene.

The Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, confirmed the incident while noting there was no loss of life. “It happened, but we thank God there was no loss of life. The driver only sustained injury, and he is receiving treatment,” he said.

The cause of the loss of control was not immediately established, and it was unclear at the time of reporting whether law enforcement had commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash or whether the driver would face any charges.

The incident has prompted renewed concern about the management of heavy-duty vehicles in the vicinity of high-security government installations. No barricades, bollards, or vehicle restrictions are reported to have been in place around the gate, which had not yet been formally commissioned.

The damage to the gate comes at a sensitive time, as the Gombe State Government continues to invest significantly in infrastructure upgrades across the state capital. The cost of repairs to the structure had not been officially disclosed as of Tuesday evening.
