Following the House of Representatives’ lead, the Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, invoking its powers under the amended 1999 Constitution.
This approval grants the President the authority to implement emergency measures, with a mandated review of the situation at any time, but no later than six months.
In line with constitutional provisions, the National Assembly has set up a joint committee from both chambers to oversee governance in Rivers State during the emergency period.
Additionally, the Senate has resolved to establish a mediation committee, comprising respected Nigerians, to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the state’s ongoing political crisis.
