Tinubu reshuffles military leadership, appoints Oluyede as new Chief of Defence Staff

In a significant move to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a sweeping reorganization of the country’s military leadership.

In the latest appointments announced on Friday, the President named General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing General Christopher Musa.

Other key appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as the Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as the Chief of Naval Staff.

Meanwhile, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI).

According to a statement issued by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, the changes reflect President Tinubu’s commitment to fortifying the nation’s defence framework and enhancing inter-service coordination in tackling emerging security challenges.

The President, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed his “profound appreciation” to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other departing Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership during their tenure.

He further charged the newly appointed military chiefs to “justify the confidence reposed in them” by demonstrating renewed professionalism, vigilance, and unity of purpose in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and citizens.

“All appointments take immediate effect,” the statement concluded.
