LASTMA prevents fire disaster after petrol tanker overturns on Lekki-Epe Expressway

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has successfully averted what could have been a catastrophic fire disaster after a fully loaded petrol tanker overturned on the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The incident occurred during peak traffic hours, creating panic among motorists and residents in the area as fuel spilled from the fallen tanker onto the road surface. Swift intervention by LASTMA officials, working in coordination with emergency responders, prevented the situation from escalating into a major tragedy.

LASTMA General Manager confirmed that officials immediately cordoned off the area, diverted traffic, and worked to contain the spill while ensuring no ignition sources came near the volatile fuel spreading across the expressway.

“Our officers responded promptly to secure the scene and prevent what could have been a devastating fire outbreak,” the LASTMA boss said. “We evacuated people from the immediate vicinity, stopped vehicular movement, and contacted relevant emergency agencies to handle the situation professionally.”

Fire service personnel, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and other emergency responders arrived at the scene to carry out fuel transfer operations and clean up the spillage. Residents and passersby were warned to stay away from the area and avoid actions that could spark a fire, such as smoking or using mobile phones near the scene.

The tanker driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to topple over and spill its highly flammable contents. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest excessive speed or mechanical failure may have been factors.

The Lekki-Epe Expressway, a major artery connecting Lagos Island to the rapidly developing Lekki and Ajah corridors, experienced significant traffic disruption as emergency crews worked to right the tanker and clear the fuel spillage. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes during the operation.

Residents of nearby communities expressed relief that the situation was brought under control without loss of life or property. Lagos has experienced devastating tanker explosions in the past, with incidents claiming dozens of lives and destroying homes and businesses.

LASTMA appealed to tanker drivers to exercise extreme caution when navigating Lagos roads, particularly on busy expressways where any accident involving fuel-laden vehicles poses enormous risks to public safety.

The agency also called on relevant regulatory bodies to intensify enforcement of safety standards for tankers transporting petroleum products, including mandatory roadworthiness checks and driver certification requirements.

By late afternoon, emergency responders had completed fuel transfer operations and begun the process of removing the tanker from the expressway. Traffic flow was gradually being restored to normal, though motorists were still experiencing delays in the area.

The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers posed by fuel tankers on Lagos roads and the critical importance of emergency preparedness in preventing disasters in Africa’s most populous city.
