Gunmen on Tuesday night attacked herders around the Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing one person and injuring another. The incident has heightened concerns over insecurity in rural communities across the state.
The attack was confirmed by the Plateau State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, who said the victims were herders residing in the area. According to him, the assailants struck at night, leaving one herder dead at the scene while another sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention.
Details surrounding the motive for the attack remain unclear, but the incident adds to a series of violent episodes involving farming and herding communities in parts of Plateau State. Residents of Gero community are said to be living in fear, as tensions persist amid recurring security challenges.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement, but calls are growing for increased patrols and proactive measures to prevent further violence and protect lives and livelihoods in the area.
