Police Inspector fatally shot by own rifle in Kano State

A tragic incident occurred in Kano State on Saturday when a police inspector, identified as Aminu Ibrahim, attached to the Kano State Police Command, died following an accidental discharge from his service rifle in the Hotoro area of the state.

According to a police source, Inspector Ibrahim was on official duty at a company in Hotoro when the accident happened.

Witnesses said he had gone to use the toilet during his shift when his rifle, which he was holding, discharged a live bullet into his abdomen. He reportedly died instantly.

“The inspector was on duty at the company premises when the incident occurred. 

Staff members recounted that he had stepped into the restroom, and in the process of squatting, the rifle discharged, striking him in the bowels. He died on the spot,” the source said.

The gunshot reportedly drew the attention of company staff, who rushed to the scene and found the officer lying motionless.

Confirming the details, a security analyst, Zagazola Makama, revealed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the rifle, bearing registration number GT 4177, was later recovered in a cocked and unsafe position with one empty shell.

He added that a count of the ammunition revealed 29 live rounds remaining from the 30 originally issued to the officer.

The deceased officer was immediately taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where a doctor on duty confirmed his death. H

is remains have since been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, Haruna Abdulahi, said the incident would be formally addressed during a press briefing scheduled for Monday by the Commissioner of Police.

“I can’t give you details on it now. The CP will address a press briefing tomorrow where the incident and other activities in the state will be made known,” Abdulahi stated.
