Troops rescue widow of former defence spokesman Rabe Abubakar

Troops of the Nigerian military have successfully rescued the widow of former Defence spokesman, Rabe Abubakar, following a security operation that led to her release from captivity.

The rescue operation, carried out by military personnel in collaboration with other security agencies, marked a significant breakthrough in efforts to secure the freedom of the abducted woman and combat the growing threat of kidnapping in parts of the country.

According to security sources, the victim had been kidnapped by armed assailants who reportedly targeted her while she was travelling. Her abduction had generated concern among family members, associates, and members of the security community due to her connection to the late military officer who once served as Director of Defence Information.

Military authorities disclosed that intelligence gathering and sustained operational pressure on criminal elements played a crucial role in locating and securing the victim’s release. Troops reportedly intensified surveillance and search operations in suspected hideouts used by the kidnappers, leading to the successful outcome.

Officials said the rescue was achieved without harm to the victim, who has since been reunited with her family. She is expected to undergo medical evaluation and counseling following the traumatic experience.

A military source familiar with the operation praised the professionalism and determination of the troops involved, noting that the rescue underscores the armed forces’ commitment to protecting citizens and dismantling criminal networks responsible for abductions.

“The successful rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated security operations and the dedication of our personnel in ensuring that victims are safely recovered,” the source said.

The incident once again highlights the persistent challenge posed by kidnapping syndicates operating in several parts of Nigeria. Security experts have warned that criminal groups increasingly target individuals perceived to have influence, financial resources, or public profiles, making the fight against abduction a priority for law enforcement agencies.

The late Rabe Abubakar was a respected military officer who served as Director of Defence Information and played a key role in communicating military operations and national security matters to the public during his tenure. His contributions to the armed forces earned him recognition within military and government circles.

The rescue of his widow has been welcomed by colleagues, friends, and members of the public, many of whom commended the military and security agencies for their swift intervention. Messages of relief and solidarity have continued to pour in from across the country following news of her release.

Meanwhile, security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend those responsible for the abduction. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest all individuals connected to the crime, while also working to dismantle the wider criminal network behind the operation.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening public safety. It also urged citizens to continue providing credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing crimes and rescuing victims.

The successful operation adds to a series of recent security interventions aimed at curbing kidnapping and restoring confidence in affected communities, as authorities continue to pursue strategies to enhance security across the country.
