Boy, 15, Kills guardian in Ilorin after poisoning attempts failed

Kwara State Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy for the alleged murder of his aunt and guardian in Ilorin, in a case the state’s Commissioner of Police described as both tragic and deeply disturbing.

The suspect, Gobri Yusuf, is accused of killing his aunt identified as Mrs Akanbi, who had adopted and raised him after the death of his mother. The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, disclosed the arrest on Friday during a press briefing at the Force headquarters in Ilorin, stating that police received a distress call on January 14, 2026, after the deceased was found in a pool of blood at her residence.

Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect concealed himself behind a door and ambushed the victim while she was bathing, using household items as weapons. Items recovered from the scene including a frying pan, weighing scale, spatula and kitchen knives were taken as exhibits.

During interrogation, the teenager confessed that the killing was motivated by long-held resentment, and that he had made two earlier attempts to poison the deceased by lacing her soup and watermelon with insecticide commonly known as “Sniper.” Both attempts failed before he carried out the fatal physical attack.

After committing the offence, he changed his clothes and left the residence under the pretext of running an errand.

The case has been forwarded to the Kwara State Ministry of Justice. Given the suspect’s age, he is expected to be processed through the juvenile justice system. Ojo confirmed that investigations are ongoing
