Flight disruptions loom as ground handlers threaten service shutdown over ₦9bn debt

Nigeria’s aviation sector faces the risk of widespread disruption as ground handling companies have threatened to suspend services over more than ₦9 billion owed by domestic airlines.

The warning was issued by the Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria, which represents key firms responsible for passenger check-in, baggage handling, and aircraft support services. The association said its members may withdraw services from Tuesday, April 28, if payment commitments are not met.

The development follows a seven-day ultimatum issued on April 21 to the Airline Operators of Nigeria, with the deadline set to expire on Monday.

Affected companies include Skyway Aviation Handling Company, Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, and other operators providing critical ground services across the country’s airports.

In a joint statement, AGHAN officials said the unpaid debt has placed severe strain on operations, affecting their ability to maintain equipment, meet safety standards, and fulfil financial obligations to staff.

The association noted that repeated engagements with airlines have not yielded meaningful progress, warning that continued operations under current conditions may no longer be sustainable.

The situation adds to mounting challenges in the aviation sector, including rising aviation fuel costs, which have already led to delays and flight cancellations nationwide.

Industry stakeholders say a shutdown of ground handling services would effectively halt flight operations, as aircraft cannot be serviced, boarded, or dispatched without their support.

In response to the growing crisis, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is expected to engage both parties in emergency talks aimed at resolving the dispute.

Passengers have been advised to monitor flight schedules closely as authorities work to avert a shutdown that could leave travelers stranded across the country.
