The family of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has announced full funeral arrangements for the beloved star, with his burial set to take place on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in his ancestral hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State.
The announcement was made in a statement posted on the actor’s official Instagram page on Monday, with the Ekubo-Okwaraeke family describing Alexx as a man whose life was marked by “love, warmth, generosity, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to God and the people he cherished.”
Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40. His family confirmed that he passed away at Evercare Hospital after what they described as “a brief but courageous battle” with advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
According to the funeral arrangements, a service of songs will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with guests expected to wear white. The wake-keep is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 7 Ekubo-Okwaraeke Avenue, Aziukwukwa, Ujari Village, Arochukwu, Abia State. The funeral service and interment will take place on Thursday, June 18, 2026. The funeral service will be held at Mary Slessor School, Amanagwu Village in Arochukwu, with interment following immediately at 7 Ekubo-Okwaraeke Avenue in Ujari Village, and a reception to be held at Mary Slessor School afterwards.
Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Alexx Ekubo hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He graduated with a Law degree from the University of Calabar and made his acting debut in the 2005 production Sinners in the House.
Before becoming a household name in Nollywood, he first gained public attention after emerging first runner-up at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria contest. He went on to build a distinguished career in the industry, featuring in several productions including Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, and Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story.
He also became a cross-continental sensation for his role as “Johnny” in Yemi Alade’s hit music video, and won a Best Supporting Actor award in 2012 for In the Cupboard.
The family expressed deep gratitude for the support received since the actor’s passing. “The overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, messages, visits, calls, and strength shown to the family during this painful period has been truly humbling,” the statement read.
