Banditry backed by politicians, Sunday Igboho alleges

Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has alleged that some Nigerian politicians are involved in sponsoring banditry and other violent crimes across parts of the country.

Speaking during a recent interview, Igboho claimed he possesses information about individuals allegedly backing criminal groups responsible for kidnappings, bandit attacks, and other forms of insecurity. However, he did not publicly identify any specific politician or provide evidence to support the allegations.

The activist said insecurity in several parts of Nigeria has been exacerbated by the activities of criminal groups operating from forests and remote communities. He argued that some influential figures may be benefiting from the continued instability, though he stopped short of naming those allegedly involved.

Igboho’s remarks come amid growing national concern over rising cases of banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on communities, particularly in the North-West, North-Central, and parts of the South-West. Security agencies have repeatedly pledged to intensify operations against criminal networks responsible for the violence.

The activist has in recent months renewed calls for greater community-based security efforts. He recently disclosed that he is awaiting federal approval to commence operations of the proposed Iru Ekun Security Network, a private security initiative aimed at supporting efforts to combat kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements in forests across the South-West.

According to Igboho, the security outfit is intended to work alongside existing security agencies, including the police, the military, and other relevant authorities, to improve safety in rural communities affected by criminal activities.

His latest comments are likely to reignite debate over the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria and allegations of political complicity in criminal activities. Similar claims have surfaced in the past from various public figures and stakeholders, although authorities have consistently maintained that investigations and security operations are being carried out based on available evidence.

As of the time of filing this report, no politician had publicly responded to Igboho’s allegations, while security agencies had not issued any official statement regarding the claims.

Analysts say any allegations linking public officials to banditry would require thorough investigation and credible evidence to establish accountability and ensure public confidence in ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
