The trio saw their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds end after suffering consecutive defeats that left them unable to secure enough points to advance under FIFA’s expanded 48-team tournament format.
Haiti, Tunisia and Türkiye have become the first teams to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a series of disappointing results in the group stage.
Haiti were the first nation to be mathematically eliminated after a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Group C. The Caribbean side, making its first World Cup appearance since 1974, had earlier lost 1-0 to Scotland and finished its opening two matches without a point.
Türkiye’s campaign also came to an early end after a 1-0 loss to Paraguay in Group D, following an opening 2-0 defeat to Australia. Despite having one group match remaining, FIFA’s head-to-head tiebreaking rules mean the Turks can no longer climb into a qualifying position.
Tunisia joined the list of eliminated teams after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan in Group F. The North Africans had previously been beaten 5-1 by Sweden, leaving them without points and ending their chances of progressing to the Round of 32.
The 2026 World Cup, being hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, is the first edition of the tournament to feature 48 teams. Under the new format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout stage.
While Haiti, Tunisia and Türkiye have been eliminated, several other nations remain in contention for places in the Round of 32 as the group stage enters its decisive phase. With more matches scheduled over the coming days, additional teams are expected to secure qualification or suffer elimination before the knockout rounds begin later this month.
