Four suspected gunmen killed as joint security team recovers weapons, IEDs in Anambra

A joint security patrol team in Anambra State has neutralised four suspected armed separatists during a gun battle in Orumba South Local Government Area, recovering weapons, explosives, and other items allegedly linked to criminal activities.

The operation was carried out by the Aguata Sector Joint Security Patrol Team during an intelligence-led patrol along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road, according to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Ikenga said security operatives had been monitoring a white Toyota Sienna bus with Lagos registration number KJA 919 KH, reportedly used by armed men to terrorise communities in the area.

He explained that the suspects opened fire on the patrol team upon sighting security operatives, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

“During the encounter, four members of the armed group were neutralised, while others escaped into nearby forests with gunshot wounds,” the police spokesperson said.

A search of the vehicle and surrounding area led to the recovery of a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) loaded with 53 rounds of linked ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, 29 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 13 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, and two live shotgun cartridges.

Security operatives also recovered four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), police camouflage uniforms, a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine, 10 Android phones, a laptop computer, multiple ATM cards, local charms, and a National Identity Card.

Police said the recovered items suggest the group may have been involved in other criminal activities, including extortion and kidnapping operations within the state.

Following the operation, security agencies launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with tactical teams combing nearby forests and surrounding communities.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State commended the joint security team, comprising police officers, military personnel, and local vigilante operatives, for their swift response and professionalism.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds at hospitals, clinics, or traditional healing centres, as efforts continue to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Police reiterated their commitment to sustaining security operations across the state and ensuring the protection of lives, property, and businesses from criminal elements.
