Court remands suspects over killing of former OGTV broadcaster Oyesiku, employee

A Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of suspects linked to the alleged murder of former Ogun State Television (OGTV) broadcaster, Oyesiku, and one of her employees, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The court granted the application filed by the prosecution, directing that the suspects remain in custody while the DPP reviews the case and determines the appropriate course of action.

The decision followed the prosecution’s request for the suspects to be remanded as investigations into the double homicide continue.

Oyesiku, a former broadcaster with Ogun State Television (OGTV), was reportedly killed alongside one of her workers in a tragic incident that shocked residents and members of the media community. The circumstances surrounding the killings prompted a police investigation, which subsequently led to the arrest of the suspects.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution informed the court that the matter required further investigation and legal assessment by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions because of the nature of the alleged offences.

The Chief Magistrate granted the prosecution’s request and ordered that the suspects be remanded pending the issuance of the DPP’s legal advice, which will determine whether they will face formal charges before a court with the appropriate jurisdiction.

Murder cases are beyond the jurisdiction of magistrate courts in Nigeria. As a result, suspects are often remanded while the DPP examines the evidence gathered by investigators and advises on whether criminal charges should be filed before a High Court.

The killing of the former broadcaster and her employee has generated widespread concern, with colleagues, residents, and members of the public calling for a thorough investigation and the prosecution of anyone found culpable.

Police authorities have assured the public that investigations into the case are ongoing and pledged to ensure that justice is served.

The case has been adjourned pending the outcome of the DPP’s legal advice.
