Tinubu administration accused of withholding N202bn Osun local government allocations mid political dispute

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has come under scrutiny following allegations that about #202bn in statutory allocations meant for local government councils in Osun State has been withheld over the past 15 months amid an ongoing political dispute in the state.

The allegation, made by the Osun State Government, has intensified the face-off between the state and the Federal Government over the administration of local government councils and the disbursement of funds.

According to state officials, the withheld allocations have significantly affected the operations of the 30 local government areas and the area office in Osun, limiting their capacity to execute developmental projects, provide basic services, and meet financial obligations.

The dispute is linked to the lingering political crisis surrounding the control of local government councils in the state. The controversy stems from disagreements over the legitimacy of elected council officials, court rulings, and the implementation of judicial decisions concerning the administration of the councils.

Osun State officials argue that despite constitutional provisions guaranteeing statutory allocations to local governments, the funds have not been released, creating financial strain on grassroots governance.

The state government maintains that the prolonged withholding of the allocations has disrupted essential public services, delayed infrastructure projects, and affected the delivery of healthcare, sanitation, education, and other local government responsibilities.

On the other hand, federal authorities have maintained that the disbursement of local government allocations must comply with prevailing legal and constitutional requirements. The controversy has also been influenced by ongoing litigation and conflicting interpretations of court judgments relating to the status of local government administration in Osun State.

The dispute comes against the backdrop of renewed national conversations on local government autonomy following the landmark Supreme Court judgment affirming the constitutional status of local governments and directing that allocations from the Federation Account be paid directly to democratically elected local government councils.

Political observers say the situation in Osun reflects the broader challenges facing the implementation of local government autonomy, particularly in states where disputes exist over the legality of council administrations.

Stakeholders have called on all parties to resolve the impasse through lawful and constitutional means to prevent prolonged disruptions to grassroots governance and public service delivery.

As the political and legal dispute continues, residents and community leaders have expressed concerns over the impact of the funding stalemate on development projects and essential services across the state’s local government areas.

The controversy is expected to remain a significant issue in Osun’s political landscape until a definitive legal or administrative resolution is reached regarding the release of the disputed allocations.
