Sowore offers to support DJ Chicken

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has pledged support for controversial disc jockey and TikTok personality, Ademola Abiodun, popularly known as DJ Chicken following his arraignment over alleged threats against Seyi Tinubu the son of President Bola Tinubu.

Sowore made the offer after DJ Chicken was brought before a Lagos court to answer charges bordering on alleged threats directed at Seyi Tinubu. The social media personality pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted #1 million bail by the court, subject to conditions.

Reacting to the development, Sowore described the case as one deserving public attention and indicated his willingness to assist DJ Chicken through the legal process.

According to the former presidential candidate and activist, every Nigerian is entitled to fair treatment under the law, regardless of their social status or public profile. He stressed that the constitutional rights of every citizen must be protected throughout criminal proceedings.

Sowore said his decision to support the embattled entertainer was informed by his long-standing advocacy for civil liberties, freedom of expression, and due process.

He maintained that while allegations should be investigated, accused persons must not be presumed guilty before the courts have had the opportunity to determine the merits of the case.

DJ Chicken was arraigned on allegations relating to statements allegedly made against Seyi Tinubu. The prosecution accused him of making threatening remarks, while the defendant denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty during his appearance before the court.

Following arguments from both the prosecution and defence, the court admitted him to bail in the sum of #1m with conditions, including the provision of a suitable surety.

The matter was adjourned to a later date for the commencement of trial, during which the prosecution is expected to present evidence in support of the charges.

Sowore’s intervention has generated reactions on social media, with supporters praising his decision to stand by the entertainer, while others argued that the judicial process should be allowed to proceed without political commentary.

The development has also reignited discussions about freedom of expression, the responsibilities that accompany social media influence, and the limits of public speech under Nigerian law.

Legal experts have noted that an arraignment is merely the formal reading of criminal charges before a court and does not constitute a conviction. Under Nigerian law, every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

As proceedings continue, attention will remain on the court as it examines the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence before reaching a verdict on the allegations against DJ Chicken.
