Church of Nigeria elects four new bishops for vacant dioceses

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has elected four new bishops to fill vacant episcopal sees in different dioceses across the country, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening leadership and pastoral oversight within the church.

The elections were conducted during the Church’s Episcopal Synod, presided over by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, The Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba. The newly elected bishops are expected to undergo the required ecclesiastical processes before their consecration and formal inauguration into their respective dioceses.

According to a statement issued after the synod, the newly elected bishops are:

The Ven. Owen Ukafia – Diocese of Uyo

The Ven. Nuhu Yohanna – Diocese of Katsina

The Ven. Matthew Tamunotari Ogaze – Diocese of Ogbia

The Ven. Ikechukwu Egbuonu – Diocese of Oji River

The elections were held to fill existing vacancies in the affected dioceses and ensure continuity in episcopal leadership.

Announcing the outcome of the synod, Archbishop Ndukuba congratulated the bishops-elect and urged members of the Anglican Communion to uphold them in prayers as they prepare to assume their new responsibilities.

He also encouraged the newly elected clerics to remain steadfast in their calling, emphasising the importance of servant leadership, sound biblical teaching and faithful pastoral care in advancing the mission of the Church.

The Church noted that the dates for the consecration and enthronement of the bishops-elect would be announced after the completion of the necessary canonical and administrative procedures.

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) is one of the largest Anglican provinces in the world, comprising more than 160 dioceses grouped into several ecclesiastical provinces. It regularly convenes Episcopal Synods to elect bishops for vacant dioceses and oversee matters relating to church governance, doctrine and mission.
