The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will confer honorary doctorate degrees on Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and three other distinguished Nigerians during its 55th Convocation Ceremony, as the institution celebrates the graduation of 12,895 students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, announced that the honorary doctorate awards will be presented in recognition of the recipients’ contributions to national development. The other honourees are businessman and philanthropist High Chief Williams Agbo, architect Dr. Kaycee Kelechi Orji, and Dr. William Franklyn Richardson.
Speaking ahead of the convocation, Ortuanya said the university would award first degrees and diplomas to 10,641 graduates, including 168 students who earned First Class honours. The overall graduating class for the 55th Convocation comprises 12,895 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The vice-chancellor described the convocation as a celebration of academic excellence and the fulfilment of the aspirations of thousands of graduates and their families, noting that it also reflects the university’s commitment to its ongoing transformation agenda.
In addition to the honorary doctorate awards, the university will confer the title of Professor Emeritus on two distinguished scholars, Professors Peter-Jazzy Ezeh and Boniface Obinna Okere, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to teaching, research and scholarship.
The 55th Convocation Ceremony is expected to attract government officials, academics, alumni, traditional rulers and other dignitaries to the university, as UNN celebrates another milestone in its history of producing graduates and recognising individuals who have made significant contributions to society.
