The National Sports Commission (NSC) has fulfilled the Federal Government’s long-awaited reward package for Nigeria’s Super Falcons, presenting the players with the cash rewards, housing allocations and national honours promised after their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The development comes just days before the nine-time African champions begin the defence of their continental title at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, ending months of uncertainty over the promised incentives.
President Bola Tinubu had announced the reward package following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the 2024 WAFCON final, which was played in July 2025 after the tournament was rescheduled while retaining its 2024 designation. Each player was promised the naira equivalent of $100,000, a house, and a national honour in recognition of the team’s historic 10th continental title.
Confirming the presentation of the rewards, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the financial commitments had been completed, with the cash paid into the players’ bank accounts and the keys to their housing allocations presented ahead of the team’s departure for Morocco. He described the gesture as the fulfilment of President Tinubu’s pledge and a morale booster for the squad as they prepare to defend their title.
The presentation follows weeks of concern after reports indicated that the players had yet to receive the promised benefits despite earlier assurances from the commission that the rewards had been processed. The delay had prompted criticism from former internationals and football stakeholders, who warned that it could affect the team’s motivation ahead of the tournament.
The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, having won a record 10 titles. Their latest triumph came after an impressive second-half comeback against Morocco, with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 victory in Rabat.
With the reward package now delivered, attention shifts to the team’s quest for an 11th continental crown, as the Super Falcons seek to extend their dominance in African women’s football at the 2026 WAFCON.
