Nigeria’s journalism community has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, at the age of 56.
Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after reportedly taking ill suddenly at his office in Lagos. His death was announced by The Eagle Online and subsequently confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), where he previously served as president.
According to reports, Oladipo had been in his usual state of health earlier in the day before he suddenly became unwell. Details surrounding the exact cause of his death had not been officially disclosed as of Wednesday.
His death has sparked tributes from colleagues, media organisations and public figures, many of whom described him as a respected journalist, publisher and media industry leader.
Oladipo had a journalism career spanning almost three decades. He began his professional journey with the ‘Nigerian Tribune’ and subsequently worked with ‘Nigerian Compass’ and ‘The Sun’ before joining ‘PUNCH Newspapers’, where he served as Politics Editor and was also a member of the newspaper’s editorial board.
He later ventured into digital publishing and founded ‘The Eagle Online’, becoming the Managing Editor and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the company behind the online newspaper.
Through the publication, Oladipo became one of the journalists who transitioned from traditional newspaper journalism into Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital media space.
Oladipo was also actively involved in efforts to organise and strengthen Nigeria’s online publishing industry.
He served as president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, an umbrella body for professional online publishers, before becoming its emeritus president. GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu confirmed Oladipo’s death in a message to members of the guild on Tuesday.
He was also the pioneer president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, an organisation established to promote collaboration and professional development among media practitioners.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Oladipo’s death as shocking, painful and heartbreaking, while extending condolences to his family, colleagues and the management and staff of Premium Eagle Media Limited.
Other journalists and media professionals have also mourned the late publisher, highlighting his professionalism, humility and contributions to journalism and digital publishing.
Oladipo’s death comes at a time when Nigeria’s media industry is undergoing significant changes, with digital platforms increasingly shaping how citizens access news and information.
His career reflected that transformation, having moved from traditional newspaper journalism and political reporting into independent online publishing and professional media leadership.
He is survived by his family.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and associates.
