The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, has reportedly banned veils, skimpy dresses, tattoos, coloured hair, and other items for students. The ban was reportedly announced in a memo issued by the university’s Student Affairs Division.
The memo, which was signed by the Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Bode Ogunmola, said that the ban is aimed at promoting decency and discipline among students. It also said that the ban is in line with the university’s dress code.
The memo listed the items that are banned as follows:
- Veils
- Skimpy dresses
- Tattoos
- Coloured hair
- Spangled hairstyles for males
- Hair braiding for males
- Touching, kissing, and hugging a member of the opposite sex
- Massaging or sitting on the lap of the opposite sex
The memo warned that students who violate the ban will be punished. The punishment could include rustication, which is the temporary or permanent expulsion of a student from the university.

The ban has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have praised the university for taking steps to promote decency and discipline. Others have criticized the ban as being too restrictive and discriminatory.
