Morocco leads Africa’s charge to 2026 World Cup; 16 teams confirmed

The race to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has intensified, with at least 17 nations already securing their places at the global football showpiece. Morocco became Africa’s first confirmed qualifier on Friday after thrashing Niger Republic 5-0 in a decisive encounter.

The Atlas Lions, who made history in Qatar 2022 as the first African team to reach the semi-finals, confirmed their ticket with two games to spare. They top Group E with a maximum 15 points from five matches and cannot be overtaken.

In South America, Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay confirmed their participation on Thursday, sealing their berths during the penultimate round of qualifiers. They join continental heavyweights Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador, who had already booked their spots.

As co-hosts of the expanded 48-team tournament, the United States, Mexico, and Canada automatically qualified, guaranteeing CONCACAF’s strong presence on home soil.

From Asia and Oceania, Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, and Australia are all confirmed participants. New Zealand also secured qualification, representing the Oceania Football Confederation.

Morocco’s qualification adds to growing anticipation across Africa, with other top nations still battling for tickets. The Atlas Lions, hailed for their remarkable run in Qatar, are determined to build on that momentum in 2026.

With more qualifying fixtures still to come across different continents, the list of confirmed participants is expected to expand in the coming weeks.
