The Trump administration has officially pulled the United States out of 66 international organisations, most linked to the United Nations, in a move analysts say deepens Washington’s retreat from multilateral engagement.
The decision follows an executive order directing a review of U.S. funding and participation in all global bodies. Key targets include the UN Population Fund and the treaty framework underpinning international climate negotiations. Officials say the withdrawal focuses on agencies viewed as redundant, mismanaged, or misaligned with American interests, particularly those working on climate, labour, and diversity-related initiatives.
This move builds on earlier withdrawals from the World Health Organisation, UNRWA, the UN Human Rights Council, and UNESCO, marking a significant departure from past U.S. policy and forcing the UN to consider staff reductions and programme cuts. Observers warn the decision signals a deeper disengagement from the post-World War II global order and a shift toward selective, interest-driven international participation.
