There is serious political tension brewing in Rivers State, as the APC-led State House of Assembly attempts to impeach the now APC administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, over what they termed “serious allegations of gross misconduct”.
The lawmakers accuse Governor Fubara of extra-budgetary spending, demolition of Assembly complex, funds withholding, and defiance of Supreme Court rulings.
The official notice which has been signed by the 26 Wike loyalist lawmakers has been read out during their plenary and the impeachment process now being deliberated, which is expected to be served within 7 days if nothing changes.
While it is within the rights of State Assembly to invoke section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, the protracted dogmatism between Wike’s camp and that of Gov. Fubara is another proof that politics (or maybe the Nigerian version of it) has unfortunately become a game of personal interest that almost completely excludes the interest of the masses.
Recall the viral statement credited to Gov. Fubara few days that he would (and I quote) “…never give anyone 35% of Rivers IGR. Never! I would rather work with it than hand it over to someone who thinks he owns Rivers.”
My question is why should there even be a debate over that in the first place?
Imagine the s!IIy anti-people demands these polithiefcians have audacity to make on the Governor of a State.
If that is what they termed fund withholding, then it’s a crying shãme.
N336billion was what Rivers was expected to generate in 2025, and 35% of that is roughly N118billion.
And whoever is making such selfish demand is still walking free among normal people?
And some will say agreement is agreement. Isn’t supposed to be a serious ¢r!me to even propose such an agreement, let alone boldly saying that somebody else agreed to connive with you to steal public mønēy?
The so-called leaders are still taking us for a ride. But we will soon have time for all of them.
