Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has strongly criticized the conduct of operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) during recent court proceedings involving activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, describing their actions as an assault on democratic norms and the rule of law.
Adeyanju, in a statement issued following the controversial courtroom incident, condemned what he termed “hooliganism” by security operatives and alleged that Sowore was unlawfully abducted after the court session. He called on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to demonstrate greater tolerance for dissenting voices and uphold democratic principles.
The activist lawyer expressed concern over what he described as increasing hostility toward opposition figures, civil society actors, and government critics, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
According to Adeyanju, the treatment meted out to Sowore raises serious questions about respect for judicial processes and citizens’ constitutional rights. He argued that security agencies must operate within the bounds of the law and avoid actions that could be interpreted as intimidation or political persecution.
“The government must learn to accommodate criticism and opposition. Democracy thrives when citizens are free to express their views without fear of harassment or intimidation,” he stated.
The controversy stems from events surrounding Sowore’s court appearance, which attracted significant public attention. Videos and eyewitness accounts circulating on social media reportedly showed tense moments involving security personnel and supporters of the activist.
Adeyanju maintained that regardless of the allegations against any individual, due process must be respected at all times. He stressed that law enforcement agencies should conduct themselves professionally and in a manner consistent with democratic values.
He further urged the federal government to ensure that state institutions remain impartial and are not perceived as instruments for suppressing political opponents or critics.
The lawyer warned that a healthy democracy depends on the existence of a vibrant opposition, independent media, and active civil society organizations capable of holding public officials accountable.
Political analysts note that the incident has reignited debates over civil liberties, freedom of expression, and the relationship between security agencies and opposition figures in Nigeria. The developments have also generated widespread reactions across social media platforms, with supporters and critics offering differing interpretations of the events.
While supporters of Sowore and various civil rights groups have condemned the actions of the security operatives, some observers have called for caution, emphasizing the need to allow legal processes to run their course and for all facts surrounding the incident to be fully established.
Adeyanju, however, insisted that democratic governance requires a commitment to protecting fundamental rights regardless of political affiliation. He urged authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure that opposition voices are treated fairly and in accordance with constitutional provisions.
As public debate continues, the incident is expected to remain a focal point in broader discussions about civil rights, political freedoms, and democratic accountability in Nigeria. Observers say the government’s response to such concerns will be closely watched by both domestic and international stakeholders committed to the promotion of democratic governance and human rights.
