The Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest and prosecution of 1,358 suspects involved in various criminal activities across the state between January and June 2026, as part of intensified efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety through intelligence-led operations and community policing initiatives.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed the figures during a security briefing in Kano, highlighting the command’s achievements in addressing emerging security threats and maintaining law and order across the state.
According to the police chief, the arrests were made in connection with offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking, thuggery, theft, cybercrime, and other violent crimes. He noted that the successes recorded were the result of sustained intelligence gathering, increased police visibility, collaboration with other security agencies, and support from community stakeholders.
Bakori said the command had adopted proactive policing strategies aimed at preventing crime before it occurs, emphasizing that community policing remains a critical component of the state’s security architecture. He explained that the police have continued to work closely with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders to gather information and address security concerns at the grassroots level.
The commissioner also pointed to ongoing security initiatives, including Operation Kukan Kura and the Violent Crime Response Unit, which have been credited with improving response times to distress calls and disrupting criminal activities in several parts of the state. Recent police operations led to the arrest of hundreds of suspected criminals and the recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit substances from various criminal hideouts across Kano.
He stated that intelligence-led operations have significantly contributed to a reduction in criminal activities across the state, particularly cases of thuggery, armed robbery, and drug-related offences. The command has also strengthened surveillance and monitoring efforts to identify criminal networks and prevent the resurgence of violent groups.
While acknowledging that security challenges remain, Bakori assured residents that the police would continue to adapt to evolving threats and deploy necessary resources to safeguard lives and property. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies.
The police commissioner commended residents for their cooperation and support, noting that effective policing requires a partnership between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
The announcement underscores the Kano State Police Command’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and maintain peace in one of Nigeria’s most populous states, amid growing calls for enhanced community-based approaches to crime prevention and public safety.
