Police in Lagos reportedly used tear gas to disperse fans of the late singer, Mohbad, who were gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate for a candlelight procession on Thursday night.
According to reports, the police fired tear gas canisters into the crowd after the fans refused to leave the toll gate. The fans had gathered to pay tribute to Mohbad and demand justice for his death.
Videos circulating on social media show police officers firing tear gas canisters at the crowd, while people are seen coughing and running away. Some people were also reportedly injured in the stampede that ensued.

The police have not yet issued a statement on the incident, but many people have taken to social media to condemn the use of tear gas on a peaceful gathering.
The candlelight procession was organized by Mohbad’s fans and friends to pay their last respects to the singer and to demand justice for his death. Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. The cause of his death is still under investigation.
The use of tear gas on a peaceful gathering is a violation of the right to freedom of assembly and expression. The police should respect the rights of Nigerians to gather peacefully and express their grievances.
