Blessing Fubara, elder brother of Siminalayi Fubara, has declared his intention to contest the Rivers State governorship election under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), promising to serve only one term if elected.
Fubara made the declaration ahead of the party’s primary election, describing himself as a “ready, competent and energetic” candidate committed to restoring peace, political stability and economic prosperity in the oil-rich state.
Speaking during his declaration, the governorship aspirant lamented what he described as the political and economic decline of Rivers State in recent years.
“We have lost opportunities. We have lost investments. We have lost our dignity as a people. We have lost our pride as Rivers people,” he said.
Fubara also called for unity across political and ethnic divides, insisting that the state must regain its lost standing.
“Today, we see a Rivers State that is distressed. Today, we see a Rivers State that is shortchanged. Today, we see a Rivers State that seems almost like a conquered state. No, we are not a conquered people,” he stated.
The NDC aspirant pledged to uphold the state’s zoning arrangement, arguing that the Rivers South-East Senatorial District should be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure in office.
“We have vowed to you to keep the peaceful existence of the political rotation of Rivers State according to our founding fathers by our districts,” he said.
Fubara further promised to spend only one four-year term in office if elected governor.
“I have vowed to do just a four-year one-term tenure to bring the expected prosperity and development in Rivers State,” he added.
His declaration comes amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State linked to the prolonged feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The crisis previously led to a state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in 2025 before normal democratic governance was restored later that year.
