Peter Obi pledges dialogue with agitators if elected president

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has pledged to engage in dialogue with various agitating groups across Nigeria if elected president, saying meaningful conversations and inclusive governance are essential to addressing the country’s security and political challenges.

Obi made the remarks during a recent public engagement, where he outlined his approach to handling separatist movements, regional grievances and other forms of agitation that have emerged in different parts of the country. He argued that many of the issues fueling unrest stem from governance failures, economic hardship and feelings of marginalisation among certain groups.

According to the former Anambra State governor, dialogue remains a more effective and sustainable tool for resolving conflicts than relying solely on force. He said his administration would seek to understand the concerns of aggrieved groups and work towards solutions that preserve Nigeria’s unity while addressing legitimate grievances.

Obi stressed that engaging agitators does not amount to endorsing unlawful activities or threats to national security. Rather, he said, it reflects a commitment to democratic principles and conflict resolution through peaceful means. He added that governments have a responsibility to listen to citizens and create avenues for constructive engagement.

The Labour Party chieftain also linked rising agitation in parts of the country to worsening economic conditions, unemployment and insecurity. He argued that addressing these underlying challenges through effective governance, job creation and social development would help reduce tensions and strengthen national cohesion.

His comments come amid ongoing national debates over how best to respond to separatist movements, ethnic tensions and other forms of political agitation. Successive administrations have adopted a combination of security operations, legal measures and dialogue initiatives in dealing with such issues.

Obi reiterated his belief that Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a strength rather than a source of division. He said building trust between government and citizens would be a central pillar of his leadership approach if given the opportunity to lead the country.

The former presidential candidate has consistently advocated governance reforms, economic revitalisation and national unity as key priorities, maintaining that inclusive leadership and accountability are necessary to address the country’s complex challenges and unlock its development potential.
