Former Defence spokesman Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar dies in bandits’ captivity

A retired Major General of the Nigerian Army and former Director of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar, has died while being held captive by bandits, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.

Abubakar and his wife were kidnapped in May while travelling through the state, prompting concern among military circles and triggering efforts by security agencies to secure their release.

The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, announced the retired military officer’s death in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the statement, Abubakar died in captivity after suffering complications arising from pre-existing health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity,” Mu’azu said.

The commissioner noted that despite sustained efforts by the Katsina State Government and various security agencies to secure the retired general’s freedom, the rescue mission was unsuccessful.

“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” he added.

Mu’azu clarified that the former military spokesman died from health complications and not as a result of violence.

“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.

The Katsina State Government described Abubakar’s death as a significant loss to his family, the state, and the nation, noting his contributions to Nigeria’s military and security architecture.

“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the commissioner stated.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and Nigerians at large, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting communities across northern Nigeria.

The governor reportedly referred to the development as a “dark moment” and called for intensified efforts to tackle banditry and other forms of violent crime in the region.

The state government reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to combat insecurity and bring criminal elements to justice.

“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement said.

Prayers were also offered for the repose of the late general’s soul and for strength and comfort for his family during the difficult period.

Major General Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information during his military career and was widely respected for his role in military communications and public affairs. His death in captivity has renewed concerns over the growing threat posed by bandit groups operating across parts of northern Nigeria.
