Anambra security operatives arrest Onitsha pastor over alleged human trafficking, underage marriage claims

Security operatives in Anambra State have arrested a pastor in Onitsha following allegations bordering on human trafficking, forced underage marriage, and abuse of congregants within his church.

The suspect, identified as Pastor Harrison Charles of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, was arrested by operatives of Agunechemba, a state-backed security outfit, in collaboration with intelligence units.

Authorities said the operation was carried out under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which empowers security agencies to investigate and dismantle suspected criminal networks operating under non-traditional cover, including religious and communal structures.

According to preliminary information from investigators, the arrest followed petitions and complaints from family members and former members of the church, who raised concerns about alleged coercive practices within the ministry.

Security sources allege that the pastor is being investigated over claims that he exploited his position of authority to manipulate congregants, including accusations involving forced relationships, coercion of spouses, and the exploitation of minors. Officials also said they are reviewing testimonies suggesting possible unlawful confinement and other rights violations within the church premises.

A senior official in the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare confirmed that a team has been deployed to assess and support individuals identified as victims, including women and underage girls allegedly affected by the situation.

Authorities say the church premises have been secured while investigations continue, including a forensic review of documents and structures within the compound.

The state government reiterated its commitment to prosecuting individuals found to be abusing religious platforms to perpetrate criminal activity, stressing that such cases would be treated with “zero tolerance.”

A security official involved in the investigation described the case as one involving “serious allegations of manipulation and exploitation,” adding that the new security law was designed to address hidden forms of abuse within communities.

Pastor Harrison Charles remains in custody as interrogations continue. Officials say he will be charged in court upon completion of ongoing investigations.
