Rep Oyekunle mourns victim of fatal rainstorm incident at Bodija market

The member representing Lagelu/Akinyele Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Folajimi Oyekunle, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a victim following a devastating rainstorm that struck Bodija Market in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a statement issued after the incident, Oyekunle described the loss of life as tragic and heartbreaking, extending his condolences to the family of the deceased, traders and others affected by the severe weather event.

The lawmaker said he was saddened by reports that the rainstorm caused significant destruction within the popular market, damaging stalls, shops and other structures while disrupting commercial activities. He noted that the incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of public infrastructure and market facilities during periods of extreme weather.

Oyekunle sympathised with traders who suffered losses as a result of the storm and called for urgent support for victims to help them recover from the impact of the disaster. He also urged relevant government agencies to carry out comprehensive assessments of the damage and provide necessary assistance to affected individuals and businesses.

According to reports, the rainstorm swept through parts of Ibadan after heavy rainfall, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The incident reportedly led to the collapse of some structures within the Bodija Market area and caused widespread damage to property.

The federal lawmaker prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and comfort for the bereaved family. He further appealed to residents to remain vigilant during the rainy season and adhere to safety advisories issued by emergency management and weather agencies.

Oyekunle reiterated the need for improved urban planning, stronger building standards and enhanced disaster preparedness measures to reduce the risks associated with severe weather conditions. He stressed that protecting lives and livelihoods must remain a priority for all levels of government.

The rainstorm is one of several weather-related incidents recorded in different parts of the country as the rainy season intensifies, raising concerns about infrastructure resilience and public safety in vulnerable communities.
