The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, on Wednesday conducted an on-the-spot security assessment at Pan-Atlantic University in Lekki following public concerns generated by a viral video showing two masked individuals emerging from a forested area near the institution.
The inspection visit, carried out alongside senior operational officers of the Lagos State Police Command, was aimed at evaluating the security situation around the university and reassuring students, staff members, parents, and residents of the police command’s commitment to maintaining safety in the area.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, triggered apprehension among members of the public, with many expressing concerns about the security of the university community and surrounding neighborhoods. The footage reportedly showed two unidentified masked individuals emerging from a bushy area close to the institution, prompting calls for heightened surveillance and security measures.
During the visit, CP Jimoh inspected key locations within and around the university environment, including areas identified as potential security vulnerabilities. The police team also engaged with university management and relevant stakeholders to review existing security arrangements and identify additional measures that could strengthen protection within the campus and adjoining communities.
The commissioner emphasized that the Lagos State Police Command took public safety concerns seriously and would continue to respond promptly to issues capable of causing anxiety among residents.
According to police authorities, the inspection formed part of proactive efforts to verify the circumstances surrounding the viral video and ensure that appropriate security measures remain in place.
Jimoh assured students, academic staff, non-teaching personnel, and parents that there was no immediate threat to the university community. He reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining a visible security presence and responding swiftly to any emerging concerns.
The commissioner urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic.
He also encouraged residents and members of the university community to report suspicious activities to security agencies through established communication channels.
“The safety of residents and educational institutions remains a top priority for the Lagos State Police Command. We will continue to monitor developments and deploy necessary resources to ensure adequate security,” he said.
As part of the response, security personnel were said to have intensified patrols in and around the Lekki axis, particularly in areas considered vulnerable due to dense vegetation or limited human activity.
Police authorities indicated that intelligence-gathering efforts had also been strengthened to determine the identities and intentions of the individuals captured in the video.
Security experts note that routine assessments and rapid responses to potential threats are critical components of modern policing, particularly in densely populated urban centres such as Lagos.
University officials reportedly welcomed the commissioner’s visit, describing it as a demonstration of the police command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of educational institutions.
The engagement between police authorities and university management also focused on enhancing cooperation in areas such as access control, emergency response procedures, surveillance systems, and information sharing.
Stakeholders expressed confidence that continued collaboration between security agencies and educational institutions would contribute significantly to maintaining a secure learning environment.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated that investigations and monitoring activities would continue to ensure that any potential security concerns arising from the viral video are thoroughly addressed.
Authorities also advised residents to remain vigilant while carrying out their daily activities and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in efforts to safeguard communities.
The commissioner’s visit comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies in Lagos to strengthen public confidence through proactive policing, community engagement, and rapid response to incidents capable of generating public concern.
For students and staff of Pan-Atlantic University, the inspection provided reassurance that security agencies are actively monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to maintain safety within and around the institution.
