Truck collision claims dispatch rider’s life in Lagos

A dispatch rider has died in a multiple road traffic crash involving two trucks at Ijesha, inward Mile 2, Lagos State.

The accident occurred on Saturday and involved a FAW truck with registration number T-30364LA, an Iveco truck marked KSF 958 XV and the dispatch rider, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency’s Eagle Response Team responded promptly to the incident.

Preliminary findings by the emergency agency indicated that the crash was caused by reckless driving and wrongful road use by the two truck drivers.

According to LASEMA, the FAW truck struck the Iveco truck while both drivers were allegedly competing for right of way. The Iveco truck subsequently hit the dispatch rider from behind, resulting in his death.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Okota Division evacuated the deceased’s remains and deposited them at a morgue for identification and other necessary procedures.

Following the crash, the two trucks were removed from the main carriageway and moved to a designated lay-by to prevent further obstruction and restore the free flow of traffic along the corridor.

LASEMA said the emergency operation, carried out by its personnel in collaboration with the police, was successfully concluded and the road was subsequently declared safe for motorists and other road users.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged commercial drivers to avoid reckless driving, wrongful overtaking and competing for road space.

He stressed that road safety remained a collective responsibility, urging motorists to comply with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.

The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to prompt emergency response and collaboration with other relevant agencies to protect lives and property across Lagos State.
