Viral ₦2.5m income claim by corn seller divides Nigerians online

A viral video featuring a Nigerian roasted corn seller claiming to earn ₦2.5 million monthly has sparked widespread debate across social media, with users divided over the credibility of the assertion and the profitability of small-scale businesses.

The video, which has circulated widely on platforms including TikTok, Facebook and X, shows the vendor explaining that her roasted corn business generates approximately ₦2.5 million in monthly revenue. The claim has since drawn thousands of reactions, with many Nigerians questioning whether the figure represents gross sales or actual profit.

While some social media users argued that the amount is achievable for a well-established business operating in a high-traffic location during peak corn season, others expressed scepticism, contending that the income figure appeared exaggerated when production costs, transportation, labour and other operating expenses are taken into account.

Several entrepreneurs and business analysts who joined the online conversation noted that public discussions about business earnings often fail to distinguish between revenue and net profit. They explained that while a business may record millions of naira in monthly sales, the owner’s actual profit could be significantly lower after deducting expenses such as the cost of purchasing fresh corn, charcoal, seasoning, rent, staff wages and logistics.

Others used the viral clip to highlight the economic potential of Nigeria’s informal sector, arguing that many small businesses can generate substantial turnover when managed efficiently and operated in strategic locations with consistent customer demand.

The debate has also reignited conversations about entrepreneurship, with some users encouraging young Nigerians to explore agriculture and food vending as viable sources of income, while others cautioned against making business decisions based solely on unverified claims shared online.

As of the time of filing this report, the corn seller’s earnings have not been independently verified, and no documentary evidence has been made public to substantiate the claim of ₦2.5 million in monthly income.

The video continues to attract significant engagement online, reflecting growing public interest in the earning potential of small businesses amid Nigeria’s challenging economic environment.
