Naomi Osaka produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to reach the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the first time in her career.
The four-time Grand Slam champion overcame the tournament’s top seed in a high-quality contest, extending her impressive comeback season and securing her maiden appearance in the last eight at Wimbledon.
Osaka, who returned to the WTA Tour after taking maternity leave in 2024, displayed powerful serving, aggressive baseline play and remarkable composure against Sabalenka, converting key break-point opportunities to earn a memorable victory over the Belarusian.
The win marks another significant milestone in Osaka’s resurgence after an injury-disrupted return to professional tennis. Although she has won four Grand Slam titles—two each at the Australian Open and the US Open—Wimbledon had remained her least successful major until this year’s tournament.
Sabalenka entered the match as the world No. 1 and one of the favourites to win the women’s singles title, having enjoyed another strong season on the WTA Tour. However, she struggled to contain Osaka’s powerful groundstrokes and consistent serving during the contest.
Speaking after the match, Osaka expressed delight at reaching her first Wimbledon quarter-final, describing the achievement as a special moment in her career.
“I’ve always wanted to do well here. To finally make the quarter-finals means a lot to me,” she said, while thanking her team and supporters for their encouragement throughout her comeback.
The victory continues Osaka’s impressive run at the Championships and reinforces her status as one of the leading contenders for the Wimbledon title. She will now face another stern test in the quarter-finals as she seeks to reach the semi-finals at the grass-court Grand Slam for the first time.
For Sabalenka, the defeat ends her Wimbledon campaign earlier than expected and brings to a close her bid for another Grand Slam title. Despite the loss, the Belarusian is expected to remain among the leading players on the WTA Tour as the season progresses.
