No fewer than 10 people have lost their lives, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road accident along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash, which occurred on the busy highway, involved a commercial bus and a truck, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene to rescue survivors, recover the bodies of the deceased, and restore the free flow of traffic.
The injured victims were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, while the bodies of those who died were evacuated and deposited at a morgue after the necessary rescue operations.
The FRSC attributed the tragic accident to excessive speeding, describing it as one of the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
According to the corps, preliminary investigations indicate that the driver involved in the crash was travelling at a speed that made it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle, resulting in the collision. Officials stressed that excessive speed significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to sudden obstacles or changing road conditions.
The agency reiterated its call on motorists to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
Road safety officials also urged commercial transport operators to avoid dangerous driving practices, including speeding, reckless overtaking, fatigue, and distracted driving, noting that such behaviours continue to claim lives across the country.
The Ibadan–Lagos Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, linking the South-West to other parts of the country. The highway has witnessed several fatal accidents over the years, with speeding, mechanical failure, and traffic violations frequently identified as major contributing factors.
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and the need for stricter compliance with traffic laws. Safety advocates have continued to call for increased enforcement of speed limits, improved driver education, and regular vehicle inspections to reduce the growing number of road traffic fatalities.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. The corps also appealed to all road users to make safety a priority, emphasizing that responsible driving remains the most effective way to prevent avoidable accidents.
