Governors of Nigeria’s 19 northern states have unveiled the governing board of the Northern States Security Trust Fund (NSSTF), committing a combined ₦1 billion monthly to strengthen efforts aimed at tackling insecurity across the region.
The initiative marks a major collaborative effort by the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) to address persistent security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other violent crimes that have affected communities across the North.
The governors said the Security Trust Fund is designed to provide sustainable funding to complement the operations of security agencies, improve intelligence gathering and support the acquisition of equipment and other resources needed to enhance security across the region.
Speaking during the inauguration of the board, the governors reaffirmed their collective resolve to confront insecurity through closer collaboration with federal security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and development partners.
According to the forum, each month ₦1 billion will be contributed to the trust fund to finance strategic security interventions and strengthen the operational capacity of agencies responsible for maintaining law and order.
The newly inaugurated board is expected to oversee the administration of the fund, ensure transparency in the utilisation of resources and coordinate security-related projects across the northern states.
The governors noted that insecurity has continued to undermine economic activities, agriculture, education and investment across the region, making a coordinated and well-funded response necessary.
They expressed optimism that the trust fund would provide a reliable financing mechanism to support ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in communities affected by criminal activities.
Among the priorities outlined for the fund are the procurement of security equipment, support for intelligence and surveillance operations, deployment of modern technology, logistics for security personnel and initiatives aimed at strengthening community-based security arrangements.
The governors also stressed that the fight against insecurity requires the cooperation of all stakeholders, urging residents to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information capable of preventing attacks and facilitating the arrest of criminal elements.
Security experts have welcomed the initiative, describing sustainable funding as a critical component of improving the effectiveness of security operations. They, however, emphasised that prudent management of the resources, accountability and measurable outcomes will determine the long-term success of the trust fund.
The launch of the Security Trust Fund comes amid renewed efforts by state governments and the Federal Government to enhance regional security cooperation in response to rising cases of armed attacks and other security threats in parts of Northern Nigeria.
Stakeholders believe the initiative could strengthen coordination among the northern states while complementing ongoing military and law enforcement operations aimed at restoring peace and protecting lives and property.
As the board begins its work, expectations remain high that the monthly funding commitment and coordinated regional approach will contribute to improved security, foster economic recovery and create a safer environment for residents and businesses across Northern Nigeria.
