Troops arrest foreign national allegedly supplying drugs to terrorists in Borno

roops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a foreign national allegedly transporting narcotics and other supplies to suspected terrorists in Borno State, in what the military described as a significant breakthrough in efforts to disrupt insurgents’ logistics network.

The suspect was intercepted during a targeted operation along a known supply route frequently used by criminal elements and insurgent groups operating in the North-East.

According to military authorities, the operation was carried out following credible intelligence on plans to move supplies to a terrorist hideout. Troops laid an ambush along the route and intercepted the suspect before the consignment reached its destination.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of large quantities of suspected narcotic drugs, psychoactive substances and alcoholic beverages believed to be intended for members of the insurgent group.

The military said the suspect was taken into custody and is undergoing interrogation as part of ongoing investigations.

Preliminary findings indicate that the foreign national allegedly entered Nigeria through illegal border routes and was coordinating with suspected terrorist collaborators operating within the Sambisa Forest axis.

Military authorities said disrupting logistics networks remains a critical component of ongoing counter-insurgency operations, noting that cutting off the supply of drugs, food and other materials weakens the operational capacity of terrorist groups.

Following the operation, commanders have intensified surveillance and patrols along border communities and suspected smuggling routes to prevent further movement of supplies to insurgents.

The military also appealed to residents, particularly those living in border communities, to report suspicious movements, unusual purchases of pharmaceutical products and unfamiliar individuals to security agencies.

Investigations are ongoing, while security operatives are analysing items recovered from the suspect to identify and dismantle the wider network behind the alleged supply chain.
