Viral video prompts Lagos probe of LAGESC officer over alleged ₦20,000 Bribe

The Lagos State Government has issued a formal query to an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Corps, after a viral video allegedly showed the official collecting a ₦20,000 bribe from a member of the public.

The state government said the officer is being investigated over allegations of misconduct and corruption, reiterating its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability within the public service.

In a statement, the government said the officer was identified after the video surfaced on social media, prompting an immediate internal investigation by the relevant authorities.

According to the statement, the officer has been served with a query in line with the Lagos State Public Service Rules and will be required to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The government noted that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken if the allegations are substantiated following the conclusion of the investigation.

Officials stressed that the administration operates a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and unethical conduct, warning that any public servant found engaging in acts capable of undermining public confidence would face sanctions.

The state government also urged residents to continue reporting cases of extortion, bribery, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct by government officials through established complaint channels.

Authorities emphasised that public feedback remains an important tool in promoting accountability and improving service delivery across government agencies.

The incident has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Lagos residents calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions if the officer is found culpable.

Observers say the case underscores the growing role of citizen-generated videos and digital platforms in exposing alleged misconduct by public officials and strengthening public oversight.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed that it remains committed to upholding integrity in public service and ensuring that officers entrusted with enforcing environmental and sanitation laws carry out their duties professionally and in accordance with the law.

As investigations continue, the government assured residents that due process would be followed and that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings would reflect its resolve to combat corruption and promote accountability within its institutions.
